    • Bottle Holders and Spice Sets

    Matryoshka Bottle Holders are hand made natural linden wood boxes, or containers, that can hold a bottle of wine or vodka. They also are wonderful decorative enhancements for your holiday table! You can also find the occasional salt box or salt and pepper shakers here as well.

    • Matryoshka Seasoning Trio. An adorable set of maidens from Sergiev Posad, probably 1990 or a bit earlier. Each matryoshka opens to house either salt, papper, or cayenne (?). Titles in English indicating was made for an export market. Tray seems to have been added later. All wood, and all hand decoration. Both decorative and functional. Dolls just under 3¼" in height, tray just under 4¼" in diameter.

    • Salt Shaker "Kurochka Ryaba" ("Курочка Ряба"). An enchanted hen lays a golden egg for an elderly couple. They unsuccessfully attempt to open it. A mouse runs past the egg and with a swipe of its tail, breaks it. The old couple are shattered by this development, but Ryaba tells them: "Don't be sad, I'll lay a new egg, not one of gold, but a simple white one." The story is at least 150 years old and there are versions in Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia and many other other cultures, including the Baltic and the Slovak cultures. Tver, late 20th century. Painted wood. 3" in height.

    • Mordva (Мордовия) Matryoshka Small Bottle Case, or Holder. This vintage small bottle case, or box, is uncommon in our experience.  Named "Erzyanka", it was produced at the Meltsan Woodworking plant. "Made in USSR" stamp on the bottom. 1980s. In Mordovia, the matryoshka appeared at the Meltsansky district industrial complex. In order to make the dolls, Meltsan workers - who were  soon to become proficient skilled craftspeople - needed to find suitable materials, construct production technology, and to train artists, who were taught by Semyonov and Sergiev Posad artists.

      The Legendary Bogatyr (Легендарный Богатырь). The bogatyr is an ancient hero or warrior somewhat like a Western European knight errant. Most of stories about bogatyrs revolve around the court of Vladimir I of Kiev (958–1015). The most prominent bogatyrs were the trio of Alyosha Popovich, Dobrynya Nikitich and Ilya Muromets, each distinguished by a character trait: Alyosha Popovich for his wits, Dobrynya Nikitich for his courage, and Ilya Muromets for his physical and spiritual power and integrity, and for his dedication to the protection of his homeland and people. This extraordinary sculptured figure stands over 16" tall! Each bogatyr is completely hand made. To simulate chainmail, hundreds of tiny pieces of straw were painstakingly inlaid. The straw is a special variety of rye harvested with a scythe, then boiled in a potassium solution to achieve the color of gold. The cut-into-shape straw is then fastened and covered with an oil lacquer. A marvel of Russian folk art! Made in the late 1980s.
