  • St. Isaac's Cathedral (Исааакиевский собор). An unusual plate offering from the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg, complete with post-2002 blue ЛФЗ backstamp (which was used on production from 2002-2005) and "Hand Decorated 1744 St. Petersburg Russia"" with an additional 1С, which stands for 1st quality. Ironically, there is nothing hand painted about this plate whatsoever, and, due to the sepia monotone, it probably was a poor seller. In any case, it makes for an unusual collector's plate from Russia, and Lomonosov, in particular.

Baranovka "Dancer" ("Плясунья"). Circa 1960. Hand painted, gilding, cobalt. A popular vintage piece whose origin goes back some 75 years in the Baranovka Factory. 3½' in height. Made for the domestic market, marked 2-C in green.  The Baranovka (or Baranówka) Porcelain Manufactory was founded by Mikhail Mezer in 1801 in Volynia, or Volhynia (then in Poland, and later annexed by Russia, thus an imperial factory). Baranówka today is located in Ukraine and is known as Baranivka; the factory either was dissolved in 2013, or it still exists and produces tablewares as well as decorative objects (both could be true, or not, according to AI). It has an interesting history, to say the least.

Cobalt Frieze Sugar Bowl.  The glamour of Cobalt Frieze reflects the high regard in which Classicism was held in Russian porcelain manufactory. It was here that restrained naturalism and formal classical beauty forged the ideal traditions of Empire china. Blue and 22kt gold on a milky white background (pictures don't do the white justice). Backstamp indicates a production run around 2005. Interestingly, the legend on the backstamp shows the then current intent to increase the market and marketability of this pattern to the West. This is expressly stated on the backstamp: "Microwave and dishwasher safe". Cobalt frieze in its original form was decorated with thin lines of genuine gold. As most everyone knows, anything with metal, such as gold, can't be used in a microwave oven due to it's reflectivity and susceptibility to arcing. Thus, the gold was eliminated in order to increase it's practical utility. Needless to say, it didn't work. Since this pattern has been discontinued, certain marketplaces have artificially enhanced the desirability of Cobalt Frieze, even in its "no gold" form, but, be forewarned, that it was intended to be utilitarian. Perhaps, the gold version is more "collectible", but obviously less useful.
