The history of the Russian Matryoshka begins with their first appearance in a Moscow arts and crafts workshop at the end of the 19th century. Japan's template was borrowed and expanded upon and Russian artists have never looked back.
Traditional vintage (pre-1991) dolls come from Semenov, Tver, Kirov and Viatka, Sergiev Posad and Zagorsk, Polkhovsky Maidan and Krutets, and Podolsk. Many of these workshops still produce dolls, especially the larger ones such as Semenov and Nolinsk (Viatka). You can even find the occasional Ukrainian, Mordovian or Mari doll from Yoshkar-Ola, Mari, Mordva and Krasnokamsk.
