Vintage Matryoshka Dolls

The history of the Russian Matryoshka begins with their first appearance in a Moscow arts and crafts workshop at the end of the 19th century. Japan's template was borrowed and expanded upon and Russian artists have never looked back.

Traditional vintage (pre-1991) dolls come from Semenov, Tver, Kirov/Viatka, Sergiev Posad/Zagorsk, Polkhovsky Maidan/Krutets, Krasnokamsk and Podolsk. Many of these workshops actively produce dolls, especially Semenov, Polkhovsky Maidan/Krutets and Nolinsk/Viatka. Other production centers can include Ukraine, Mordova, Mari, and Yoshkar-Ola. Some even come from Argentina.
