Product Description
Antique carved toy representation of the monastery at Sergiev Posad. Circa 1890-1910. Wooden toys were made in the Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod regions by professional craftspeople, espcially those connected with the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the largest spiritual and cultural center of Russia. In the 1880s, there were over 300 toy workshops, most of which produced molded toys and wooden carved toys by carpenters and turners. The most famous toy from Sergiev was the matryoshka nesting doll. The number of workshops shrunk over time as cheaper, mass-produced toys were imported.
