This is an authoritative scholarly work by Anton Vladimirovich Kartashev (1875-1960), a prominent theologian and historian of the Russian Church and professor at the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. He briefly was the last Ober-Procurator of the Most Holy Governing Synod of the Orthodox Church in Russia and Minister of Religion in the Russian Provisional Government. In this text, he presents an overview of the main historical stages in the development of the Russian Orthodox Church while drawing on the knowledge accumulated by Russian and foreign historiography. The second volume covers the period from the establishment of the patriarchate in Russia (1589) to the reign of Paul I (late 18th century).
