Kovrov is a picturesque city of about 170,000 inhabitants and is located on the banks of the Klyazma River in the Vladimir Oblast of western Russia. It is about 150 miles northeast of Moscow and 45 miles south of the city of Ivanovo. Kovrov was founded in 1778 under the reign of Catherine the Great by Prince Vasily Andreyevich Kovrov of Perm. The folk figures and whistles of this town are very playful and are the very definition of whimsical - in short, wonderful exponents of applied Russian folk art from a bygone era.
