Product Description
Ilya Murometz Standing at the Crossroads. The legendary bogatyr is depicted with his faithful horse, Karushka, coming to the stone marker that is pointing to the Ukrainian cities of Киев (Kiev), Чернигов (Chernigov) and back to Муром (Murom). Ilya of Murom liberated Kiev from the Pagan forces and faithfully served Prince Vladimir (aka Equal-to-the-Apostles). Along the way to Kiev, he defended the city of Chernigov from invasion by the Polovtsy. Although a legendary person, Ilya Murometz is also associated with St. Ilya Pechersky (a monk of the Kievan caves), whose relics are preserved in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.
Beautifully detailed high-relief elegant souvenir brass/copper dish (4⅝" diameter). Circa 40 years ago. Two available.
