In the Garden (В саду). The young Palekh artist, Anzhela Rustamovna, displays distinct maturity as she captures the style of an Orthodox icon in the young girl's face and outstretched hands. Anzhelina was just 23 years old when she painted this delicate tiny box.
Papier-mache, egg tempera paints, lacquer. Detailed decorative freehand scroll border in gold. Signed by the artist in gold and dated 1990. 1 only, as shown.
Anzhelina Rustamovna Khamidova (Анжела Рустамовна Хамидова) was born in 1967 in Kazan, Tatarstan (Казань, Татарстан). She studied at the Palekh Art College from 1982-1987 and worked in the Palekh Art and Production Workshops for two or three years it was liquidated in and around 1989-1991. She lives in the village of Palekh, where she still produces, displays and sells at the Masters Fair.
Note: White, cloudy areas in the photos are "hot spots" caused by studio lights reflected from off the shiny lacquer. The box is fine.
