Owl Family in a Tree Stump (Семья сов в пне). Enchanting owl set in an unusual tree stump shape with enhancements that include wood burning and painting. All pieces open (except the last one). Circa 1988-1990. 4 nest, 2¾" x ⅞". Like new condition. 1 only.

This unusual matryoshka was made in Kalinin, a city situated on the Upper Volga River. In fact, it was the medieval city of Tver, whose name was changed to one of Stalin's allies (Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin). After 1991, many cities were restored to their pre-Soviet names, for example Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk), Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin), Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) to name just a few.
