The Palace of Pavlovsk is one of the finest structures in St. Petersburg and it houses an extraordinary collection of art treasures. The construction of the palace was begun in 1777 for heir to the throne Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, the son of Catherine the Great (1729-1796), herself one of the most powerful rulers of her time.
