A "podstakannik" (подстаканник) is a tea glass holder. The word translates to "beneath the glass." It's a traditional way of serving hot tea. The filigree tea glass holders that we carry are hand made in the Russian artisan village of Kazakovo (Nizhny Novgorod, Volga region). In fact, filigree is reminiscent of lace work popularly known as "bobbin lace." Stock is limited.
The village of Kazakovo, 230 miles east of Moscow (Vachsky district, Nizhny Novgorod, Volga region), is a center for the artistic processing of metal using the filigree technique. This art was brought here in the 1930s from the village of Krasnoe-on-Volga. Craftsmen have been creating this amazing filigree metalwork, using only scissors and pincers, for almost 80 years.
