Product Description
The Church of the Epiphany (Церковь Богоявления) in Oshevensk, Kargopol (Ошевенск, Каргополь), is a 1787 wooden church in the Arkhangelsk region (Архангельская область), located in the Pogost hamlet near the Churyega River (Деревня Погост недалеко от реки Чурьега). Pogost is a name derived from a term for sacred ground that usually contained a cemetery and church.
The Epiphany church, together with its discrete bell tower, is a prime example of Russian Northern architecture, built from pine logs. It features an octagonal, tent-roofed design. The interior, which encompasses one of the largest such spaces among northern log churches, contains paintings, unique among the wooden churches of the far North.
During its period of closure (1930-1960), most of the icons in the main iconostasis were filched. The icons in the uppermost row, dedicated to the Prophets, survived, but in October 2014, the church was broken into and these remaining icons were stolen. Only the magnificent carved icon screen remained. Although most of the icons have now been recovered, much work remains to restore the church to its former glory.
Genuine painting by Russian artist, Igor Shepel. 5"x7". Mounted in a simple wood frame. 1 only.
