Treasures from the Kremlin grew out of an exhibition of Russian art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1979. Six then-curators of the Kremlin museums wrote engrossing and authoritative essays about icons, gold and silver (including Western European silver), arms and armor, textiles and needlework, and ceremonial equestrian accessories (!).
Included are the twelfth-century silver-gilt chalice of Yuri Dolgorukiy, founder of Moscow, the icon The Savior of the Fiery Eye, the damascened helmet of Ivan the Terrible's son, the coat of mail worn by Boris Godunov and many treasures from the Armory, which is the private treasury of the czars.
