Leonid Nikolaievich Andreyev (1871-1919) was a prolific Russian playwright, writer of short stories and sometimes novelist. He is one of the most talented and prolific representatives of the Silver Age period in Russian history. He was associated with the Symbolist and Expressionist schools of writing. He was married to Alexandra Veligorskaia, a niece of Taras Shevchenko. Andreyev's four-act play was translated and published 3 years after Andreyev's death due to heart failure by Herman Bernstein.
