Winter Troika (Зимняя Тройка) by Yury Viktorovich Zhegalov (Юрий Викторович Жегалов) (1927-1992). Born in Palekh, Yury Viktorovich studied at the Palekh Art School from 1943-1948 and, in 1951, graduated from the Moscow School of Industrial Art. From 1951-1988 he taught at the Palekh Art College. He is buried in Palekh church cemetery. He is the son of Viktor Vasilievich Zhegalov (1898-1941), who was a master of icon painting and member of the Artel of Ancient Painting. Egg tempera, lacquer, papier-mache gold. Approximately 5½" x 3¾" x 1". 1 only.
The troika is the classic theme of Russian art, including lacquer miniatures. The famous sleigh or carriage that is pulled by three horses is both a symbol of old Russia and a symbol of contemporary Palekh. The color palette is traditional: red and gold for the horses and blue for the icy snow.
