The history of Zhostovo arts and crafts (Жостовская роспись) dates back to the early 19th century. Its roots align with painted lacquered objects on papier-mache and Ural Tagil flower painting, which appeared earlier in the 18th century. In 1922 «Novosel'tsevo work artel» was founded in Novosel'tsevo in the Podmoskovye region, which made lacquered metal trays. In 1924 "Zhostovo work artel" and "Spetskustar" were also founded there and in 1925 two more, "Lakirovshik" and "Svoy trud". In 1925, all of them were combined into one artel "Metallopodnos". Today, it is named The Zhostovo Factory of Decorative Painting (Жостовская фабрика декоративной росписи).
