Autumn (Осень). Panel painting by Leonid Nikolaevich Ilyin (Леонид Николаевич Ильин). Leonid Nikolaevich (1928-?) is a lacquer miniature artist, and the grandson of the Russian artist I. A. Shavrin. Leonid Nikolaevich has been working in Fedoskino since 1946. The famous Russian lacquer miniaturist M. Chizhov mentioned him in his book: Among miniaturists. Notes of Fedoskino masters, Artist of USSR, 1982, Leningrad (page 220, 249).
Oil painting on papier-mache. Approximately 16¼"x 4⅝". Weighs 1½ pounds. Materials used are oils paints, papier-mache, metallic powders, and lacquer. Dated 1978, signed by Ilyin and noted by him: "в индивидуальном исполнении" (custom execution). Purple wire on the back is an improvised "hook" for hanging. Light indications of wear, overall near fine.
An interesting note about papier-mâché, which means "chewed paper" in French. Several layers of glued cardboard, boiled in linseed oil and dried in several stages in a hot oven, create a material as strong as wood, lightweight, and waterproof, which can be sawed, sanded, and coated with various primers and varnishes.
