A real testimony to the importance of growing food and realizing a bountiful harvest. In that light, she is a relatively recent icon that was commissioned as a gift by Ambrose of Optina (1812-1891) for the Shamordino women’s convent (The Convent of St. Ambrose and Our Lady of Kazan is a stavropegial Russian Orthodox convent in the village of Shamordino, Kaluga Oblast, Russia), which St. Ambrose had founded. The icon shows the Theotokos riding enthroned on a cloud above a flourishing wheatfield while praying with outstretched arms. A stunning visual image.
