Theotokos "of the Sign" Icon (Икона Божией Матери Знамение). Icons of this type are often called Oranta (Latin for praying). Our Lady presents us with Christ and our attention is drawn to her Son, our Saviour. On November 27, 1165 during an assault on their city, the citizens of Novgorod brought the icon to the city wall. An arrow pierced the icon and the Most Holy Mother of God shed tears. Inspired by the miraculous sign, the people of Novgorod repelled the attack. The Russian Church celebrates the Feast of the Icon “Znamenie” on December 10, (November 27 o.s.) 4¾"x7½". Painted in Russia. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. 1 only.
