The Peterhof Palace, aka "The Russian Versailles" is a series of palaces and gardens located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Peter I, aka "The Great", commissioned the palace after seeing the Palace of Versailles of Louis XIV. The architect between 1714 and 1728 was Domenico Trezzini who favored the Baroque style. Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700-1771) completed an expansion from 1747 to 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia. The name was changed to "Petrodvorets" ("Peter's Palace") in 1944 as a result of anti-German sentiment, but the original name was restored in 1997.
