Product Description
Russian Matryoshka. By Larissa Soloviova and Marina Marder. Russia (Moscow): Interbook, 1993. 63 pages. In English. It's not easy to find a lot of information on Russian nestings dolls, particularly in book form. This volume does a nice job of balancing historical information on the regional production centers (Sergiev Posad, Nizhni Novgorod, Semenov, Polkhovsky Maidan and Vyatka plus some regional workshops) and the "author's matryoshka" phenomenon that had emerged from Russia. The photos are quite lavish, while the text is basically informative. The dual authorship of this book is attributed to the fact that Marder was an importer and wholesaler of Russian arts and crafts and attached her name to it. (Her company was headquartered in Wheeling, IL and no longer exists.)
