Sergei Mikhailovich Stepniak-Kravchinskii (Сергей Михайлович Степняк-Кравчинский) (1851-1895) went by Sergius Stepniak in 19th-century London revolutionary circles. He is known for assassinating General Nikolai Mezentsov, chief of Russia's Gendarme corps and head of secret police in 1878. He was a member of the Circle of Tchaikovsky, a group of Narodnik philosophers and political activists. He was the inspiration for the main hero of Ethel Voynich's The Gadfly, and his publications influenced the works of Leo Tolstoy, Emile Zola and, of course, Lenin.
