Theotokos Hodegetria (Богородица Одигитрия) literally means "She who shows the way." The Mother of God is depicted holding the Child Jesus, sitting upright and facing the viewer, as She points to Him as the source of salvation for mankind. She is the source of grace to those looking for God. The rolled up scroll refers to the New Testament and the descent of the Holy Spirit. The most venerated original Hodegetria icon was displayed in the Monastery of the Panaghia Hodegetria in Constantinople, which was built specially to contain it.
