Decorative Painted Box "Veliky Ustyug". A painting of the 17th century Assumption Cathedral (Успенский собор) of the Virgin Mary, which is part of the architectural ensemble of the older monastery. It is on the banks of the Sukhona River, close to the town of Veliky Ustyug. The image of the ensemble is painted as if reflected in the river - a nice touch!

The painting is on a hinged pine box covered with thin celluloid panels to resemble brown marble. The effect is quite striking. Made at the "Экспериментальная Фабрика Художественных Изделий Великоустюгские Узоры" ("Experimental Factory of Art Products Veliky Ustyug Patterns"). Circa 1984-1988.
