Product Description
The Icon of the Virgin “Galaktotrophousa” (Γαλακτοτροφουσα, which means “The Milk-Giver”) is a rare and unique depiction of the Mother of God. She goes by a great many names: Nursing Mother of God, Virgin Lactans, as well as Икона Богородице Млекопитатељнице (in Serbian). The icon resided for many centuries in the Holy Lavra of St. Sabas (Mar Saba), an ancient Greek Orthodox monastery near Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Holy Monastery of Hilandar, the Serbian Monastery of Mount Athos, houses the Panagia Galaktotrofousa, as well as the Panagia Tricherousa ("Three-Handed Theotokos"). The Milk-Giver Icon is in the Iconostasis of Hilandar’s church.
