Product Description
Watercolor Matryoshka (1998). This is one of the earliest watercolor matryoshka dolls that we've seen. Each doll is a miniature of the one preceding it and was fully handmade and painted in 1998 by an anonymous artist from St. Petersburg in a workshop identified as "Матрена". Some faint writing on the bottom of the first doll shows "7 мест" (7 nest). The painting is disciplined (watercolors on the soft linden wood prefered by the artist is difficult to apply without smearing), and elaborate. A real beauty! 6¾" down to 1¼". In fine condition. 1 only.
During this time period, somewhere between 1987 and 1999, artists would demur from signing their work due to old fears of engaging in "capitalist" endeavors (making a profit) and having a trail linked back to them. This was more pronounced in the bigger cities, where fear of reprisals was hard to shed completely.
