Product Description
Gorbachev with Old Communist Leaders. This set appears to be an early one in the lineage of Gorbachev, aka, political nesting dolls. The anonymous artist has tackled his or her representation of the former Soviet leaders by simplifying and caricaturing them. The approach is somewhat demure, and the choice of colors is unusual. Mikhail Gorbachev is wearing a green suit with a large map of the USSR (CCCP) in yellow. Leonid Brezhnev wears a brown suit with stars and ribbons signifying his importance. Khrushchev is in Ukrainian peasant yellow covered by green corn stalks Stalin is in blue and Lenin in dark brown. Nice caricatures, set is in about fine condition, pieces sit well, some mild chipping around the centers where the pieces open. 6¾" down to 1¾". 1 only.
Most of the the early "Gorby" (an mildly affectionate name for "Gorbachev") dolls were made by talented amateurs in the Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev transformed the USSR by unleashing a pair of political, and cultural, waves. The first was "Гласность" (Glasnost, i.e, openness) and "Перестройка" (Perestroika, i.e., rebuilding). These shock waves led to unrestrained freedom of expression. This set leading off with Gorbachev indicates that it was made before 1991, before Yeltsin was elected, and Gorbachev demoted to second place.
