Theotokos Hodegetria (Богородица Одигитрия). This icon is known as "She who shows the way." The Mother of God is depicted holding Her child as She points to Him as the source of salvation for mankind. The scroll represents the new testament. The icon originated in Constantinople and soon spread all over the Orthodox world. It was believed that the icon had been painted by Saint Luke and sent to the eastern Roman empress Pulcheria (399-453) by her sister-in-law Athenais-Eudokia in the middle of the 5th century.
