Alexander Nikolayevich Afanasyev (1826-1871) was an ethnographer who edited and published nearly 600 East Slavic and Russian fairy and folk tales, one of the largest collections of folklore in the world. The first edition in eight volumes was published from 1855 to 1867, earning him the reputation of the "Russian Brothers Grimm".
