Abramtsevo-Kudrino Spoon. This extra-large spoon was made in the last half of the 20th century. High-relief carving from a single piece of wood. Hook on the back and a maker's mark. 19¼" length, 4¼" width. Near fine condition. 1 only.
Carved lettering reads: "Сухая ложка рот дерет" ("A dry spoon will scratch your mouth"). This saying comes from ancient times when spoons were made from wood, but it is a metaphor for embarking upon a useless action.
Abramtsevo-Kudrino woodcarving originated with the artists of the Abramtsevo circle (Abramtsevo Estate of Savva Mamontov) situated near Moscow. In 1890, V.P. Vornoskov, founded his own workshop in his native village of Kudrino. In the years following, carving arts and crafts works were developed by talented craftsmen and artists of different generations. Presently the center of Abramtsevo-Kudrino Wood Carving is located in Khotkovo in the Sergiev-Posad Region. Specialists of Abramtsevo-Kudrino Wood Carving are trained at V.M. Vasnetsov Arts and Crafts College in Abramtsevo.
