Product Description
1930s Noritake Sauce Boat . An uncommon piece that was influenced by Khokhloma design utilizing the traditional primary colors of red and black, plus gold. The inside finish is lustre and there are two elegant piercings by the handle.
Some light wear at the lip, otherwise excellent with no chips or cracks. 5¾" length, 3⅝" width and 2¼" in height. 1 only.
The mark is "M" for Morimura in a wreath and crowned by "NORITAKE" and below it, "Hand painted" and "Made in Japan". The use of the "M" gives a date before 1953 when "M" in a wreath was replaced with a "N" for Noritake. Until 1921 Noritake predominately marked export wares Nippon meaning Japan in Japanese, while most back stamps after 1921 state "Japan" or "Made in Japan." From the early 1920s, and probably until 1940, most, if not all, patterns for the US market were designed in New York.
