Zemlyanoy Gorod in 17th-century Moscow was the outer ring of the city, surrounded by ramparts and a moat. It surrounded the older moat built by the Italian Renaissance architect Aloisio the New in the early 16th century which delimited Bely Gorod. It covers the area which is now in between the Boulevard Ring and the Garden Ring roads. The book opens with an essay on the town-planning history. The territory is divided into separate sectors. Landmarks within each sector are considered in chronological order. The sections of the book that correspond to the sectors are provided with archival drawings, maps, drawings, old engravings and photographs, to which detailed comments are appended.
