Mikhail Petrovich Artzybashev (aka Artsybashev) (1878-1927), was a novelist and playwright, best known for his controversial work Sanine (1907, tr. 1914). Born in Ukraine, his father was the district police chief. His early works are stylistically comparable to Tolstoy, with influences of Nietzsche and Dostoevsky, as they are filled with intense pessimism, immorality individual free will. In 1923 he was exiled from Russia and, settling in Poland, wrote critically of the Soviet system.
Red cloth hardcover in overall good condition. Gilt spine titles have faded. Front hinge has separated slightly. No writing or names. Uncommon title. 1 copy only.
