Authentic Russian nesting dolls are created in a workshop/factory in Semenov (Semyonov), about a 90-minute drive from Nizhny Novgorod. It both describes the distinct ornamental style and the town. It is a laborious process that takes careful diligence. The workshop employs 700 and utilizes various heavy machinery, including sanders, drills, lathes and routers. Men work these machines and women do the painting. They are rated on their skill levels. The first artist uses a thin brush to mark the outlines of the face and body, the second artist fills in color and the final artist paints the details.The matryoshka from Semenov has a lot in common with Khokhloma painting, another form of art beloved of Old Russia's culture. During the latter half of the 20th century, these classical and traditional Semenov doll sets were the most ubiquitous as well as the most formal of matryoshka designs.
