Zhostovo flower painting is similar to tole painting, rosemaling and bauernmalerei. Roses and daisies are very popular. The history of Zhostovo arts and crafts (Жостовская роспись) dates back to the early 19th century. Its roots align with painted lacquered objects on papier-mache and Ural Tagil flower painting, which appeared earlier in the 18th century.
