Product Description
Nested Easter Egg. Folk art from Krutets at its most distinctive. The painting is wildly naïve enough to suggest that it was done by children, which is not uncommon in the region. 1970s-1980s. 3⅜" x 2¼". About fine condition, 1 only.
In the Voznesensky district of Nizhny Novgorod (formerly Gorky) region, the village of Krutets is nearby neighbor to the better known towns of Polkhov Maidan and Semenov. In Krutets, craftsmanship is more experimental in terms of shapes and forms. Artists strive to create something new - they don't like to repeat themselves. Very often landscapes, images of animals, people, and temples are found on the toys. The designs are applied immediately, without a preliminary drawing. The artist will add traditional black strokes and apply darker colors to the flowers and leaves. Oil paints and aniline dyes are combined for effect. Krutets folk art includes small boxes, mushrooms with removable caps, nesting dolls and eggs. Work from Krutets can be pronounced "крутецкие" (krutetskiye) or "крутцовские" (kruttsovskiye). All said, take a close look at the images for this uncommon set, and expect to be rewarded. If you're into folk art, that is.
