    Vintage and collectible Matryoshka dolls from the 1960's-1990's can be found here. These include, at any given time, dolls from Moldova, Yoscar (Yoshkar) Ola, Belarus and Ukraine, Poland, Mari El Republic, Perm, Vladimir and the Moscow region and even the occasional Japanese Kokeshi. After all, it was Japanese craftspeople  that first inspired Russian painters and woodworker to make the matryoshka synonymous with their arts and crafts.

     

    • Argentine Egg Maidens. The egg shaped matryoshkas from Argentina were produced in very small quantities, thus are scarcer than the already scarce regular dolls. 4 nest, 2¼" in height down to ¼".   This nesting doll has an unusual history. An enterprising group of Russians, displaced by World War II, settled in Argentina after the war. One family, keepers of the flame at the time, created a modest workshop and began making a limited number of handicrafts, including matryoshkas consisting of 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 pieces. These sets were like miniature jewels, made from indigenous birch-like wood and nicely decorated and painted. As quickly as these dolls came to the marketplace, they disappeared.
