Book describes three departments of the State Museum of Arts of the Karakalpak Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in the city of Nukus. First, the Department of Ancient and Medieval Art (1st century BC - 13th century AD), then the Department of folk applied art of Karakalpaks (19th to 20th centuries), and finally the Department of Fine Arts, including Painting, Graphics, and Sculpture of the 20th century. Opened in 1966, the museum has a collection of over 82,000 items, ranging from antiquities from Khorezm to Karakalpak folk art, Uzbek fine art and the second largest collection of Russian avant-garde in the world (after the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg). The museum now bears the name of Igor Vitalievich Savitsky (1915-1984), aka the "Central Asian Tretyakov", who was its first director and through whose efforts this unique art collection was created.
