The Red Horse Brooch

The Red Horse, in Slavic culture, can be a symbol of the sun, fire and of a new life. The word "red" ("красный"), also means "beautiful" ("красивый"). It also can be found, that the horse friend is considerably better than the human friend. Ivan appears to be having an animated conversation with him.

A larger (3¼" x 1¾") papier-mache brooch. Signed "Palekh" and "Smolov", although the work is more like that from Mstera. No date, but circa mid-1990s. Still nice painting in excellent condition. Gift boxed. Traditional safety pin back. 1 only. Note: "hot spot" glare in photo is not on the brooch itself.
