Product Description
Yusupov Palace. Introduction by G. Sveshnikova. A cultural and historical guide to this (in)famous 19th century Palace on the Neva river. The Yusupov Palace was originally built for the niece of Peter the Great in the early 1700s. Over the next century it changed hands many times and was finally purchased by one of Russia's richest family, the Yusupovs. At the end of 1916, Prince Felix Yusupov, together other members of Russian high society, conspired to murder Grigory Rasputin. The mystic monk was poisoned, shot, and bludgeoned in the palace, and finally thrown into the frozen River Neva. During the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, the Yusupov family fled the country and the palace was transferred to Soviet control. The family’s lavish art collection was given to the Russian Museum and State Hermitage, and the Yusupov Palace was turned into a museum.
