Sergei Mikhailovich Stepniak-Kravchinskii (Сергей Михайлович Степняк-Кравчинский) (1851-1895) went by Sergius Stepniak in 19th-century London revolutionary circles. He is known for assassinating General Nikolai Mezentsov, chief of Russia's Gendarme corps and head of secret police in 1878. English Translations by Eve Shapiro, Musical arrangements, selection and editing by Vladimir Frumkin.  Bulat Shalvovich Okudzhava (Булат Шалвович Окуджава) (1924-1997) was a poet and singer-songwriter with a large following. Second only to Vladimir Vyssotsky, Okudzhava, though born in Moscow, was of Georgian-Armenian ancestry. He is credited as one of the founders of the Russian/Soviet genre known as "author song" ("авторская песня"). His output consists of nearly 200 songs, set to his own poetry. His songs are a mixture of Russian poetic and folks song traditions as well as the French chansonnier style (think: Georges Brassens). Somewhat scarce book.

    • The Naked Year (Голые Года). Boris Pilnyak (Борис Пильняк - 1894-1938). Written in 1922, the novel was one of the first fictional accounts of the Russian Civil War. Set in the provincial town of Ordinin, it is an unconventional impressionistic account of people from different social groups, including merchants, the nobility (House of Ordinin), peasants and townspeople. Pilnyak criticizes the starvation and indiscriminate slaughter of the Revolution and these comments helped condemn him down the road. Eventually he was accused of plotting to kill Stalin and Nikolai Yezhov (head of NKVD), and of being a Japanese spy. He was tried in 1938, pleaded guilty, and was executed the same day at the Kommunarka shooting ground.  MI (Ann Arbor): Ardis Publishers: 1975. Translated from the original Russian by Alexander R.
