Vladimir Nikolaevich Voynovich (1932-2018) wrote prose, poetry and plays. In 1980 he was forced to emigrate from the USSR and was deprived of Soviet citizenship; until the mid-2000s he lived in Germany. The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin was developed by Voinovich starting in 1963, and circulated in samizdat. The first part was published (without the author's permission) in 1969 in Frankfurt am Main, and the entire book in 1975 in Paris.
