Vintage Kazakovo Filigree 1950s

Vintage Kazakovo Silvered Filigree Tea Glass Holder, circa 1950s. Delicate flowers (Ажурные цветы). Marked on underside: "КХИ" in a rectangle indicating the Kazakovsky factory of art products. 1-С on bottom indicates 1-й сорт (1st quality product). Beautiful pattern sprinkled with a few seed grains. It has the older filigree handle and a round top edge (later holders eliminated these as technology evolved). In good vintage condition, clean and pleasing to handle. 3" diameter and 3¾" to top of handle. 1 available, as shown. Condition note: bottom lip has some uniform dents and silver loss exposes yellow copper. 

The Kazakovsky artel "Metallist" specialized in high quality and labor intensive production of filigree work. It began 85 years ago, in the late 1930's in the Nizhny Novgorod Region in the village of Kazakovo. Besides teaglass holders, the enterprise made small jewelry boxes, candy dishes and baskets, teaspoons and delicate women's jewelry.

The filigree ornament is geometric - zigzag ribbons, waves, circles, semicircles and more complex figures, but the predominant influences are floral motifs, i.e., a flower with elongated petals and long leaves with curls. The word filigree comes from the Latin: "filum", which is thread, and "granum", which is grain. The Russian term is skan (скань) Old Slavic for "twist".
