Product Description
Early 20th Century Vologda. Possibly pre-revolutionary work. An unusual (in that it's not a more common peasant/village scene) pastoral Northern lake or sea scene as seen from a clearing. Birds (seagulls?) and boats are in the distance and the sky is cloudy. The pine box is hinged and all the sides are carved with ornamentation. The box is in very good condition, minor paint loss and edge wear (please look at photos). Painting on a carved wooden box with a lot of character. 9¼"x 4¼"x 3¼". 1 only.
Vologda is an historic city founded in the 12th century. Many handicrafts came from the Vologda region with traditional carved and painted woodwork being one of them. Vologda is approximately 250 miles straight north of Sergiev Posad.
