Icon cross pendant of the St. Michael the Archangel (Архангел Михаил). This exquisite cross pendant was painted by Andrey Mikhailovich Kotukhin using traditional materials: egg tempera, papier-mache, gold leaf, metallic paints, a squirrel hair brush and lacquer. Kotukhin is a highly acclaimed third-generation Palekh artist and has formed his own company in Palekh. Entirely handmade and painted on papier-mache using traditional materials: egg tempera, gold leaf, metallic paints, a squirrel hair brush and clear lacquer. Michael is accorded the title "Archistrategos", or "Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Hosts." He is depicted with a sword, representing his warrior status, and a crown, which represents his authority over the earth. In Eastern Orthodoxy Michael is revered as a saint.
