Product Description
Matryona from Bogorodsk. Matryona (or Matrona) is derived from the Latin, which means a married woman. It also can be defined as "honorable lady", "mother of the family", or simply "mother". In some circles, matryona can be diminuated to matryoshka.
A nicely decorated doll from Bogorodsk (see below) from around 2000. 5 nest, 4" down to 1½". About fine condition. 1 only.
It has been noted elsewhere on our website, that Bogorodsk is not a production center of matryoshka dolls, but is known for its carvers. We think the artist, who painted this set, lived in Bogorodsk. The full script on the bottom of the first doll: "б.р. Эмма худ Морозова 000 Матрена" which appears to be: "B(ogo-) R(odsk) Emma artist Morozova 000 Matryona".
