The Nursing Mother of God is also known as the Virgin Lactans, the Nourisher of Life, or Galaktotrophousa (the Milk-Giver). The new-born Holy Infant Christ is depicted being fed from His Mother's breast. It vividly portrays the beginning of our human feelings of love, joy, warmth, and maternal attachment. It is an old icon type, having been found in 8th century Byzantium. The predominantly green colors indicate that the icon is generally venerated in the summer.
