Coryne Hall. Little Mother of Russia: A Biography of Empress Marie Fedorovna (1847-1928). Empress Marie Feodorovna, consort of the next-to-last Tsar of Russia (Alexander III, father of Nicholas II). A daughter of the king of Denmark, Marie exchanged the informality of her native country for an opulent yet rigid Russian court life, but the premature death of her husband in 1894 devastated her. Although her influence had been subtle during her husband's reign, the author, royal historian Coryne Hall, gives special understaning into the Empress' relationship with her son, Nicholas II. Hall is generous and insightful in analyzing these relationships between the extroverted Marie and her reserved daughter-in-law, Empress Alexandra. Though Nicholas and Alexandra and their family suffered a terrible fate in 1918, Marie, on the other hand, was rescued from the Bolshevik government and lived in Copenhagen, until she passed away at the age of 80.
