Cossack Motifs (Казачьи мотивы). A tour-de-force fully painted gem of a doll based on the culture, traditions and people known as the Don Cossacks (Донские казаки). Among their more famous members are Mikhail Sholokhov, whose novel, "And Quiet Flows the Don", deals sympathetically with the Don Cossacks and Serge Jaroff's "Don Cossack Choir", a group of former officers of the Russian Imperial Army. The choir was was popular in America, Japan and Europe, touring the world in the 1930's-1950's, and up until the present day. This is a very rewarding doll painted with many figures - 21 in all, both young and old, men and women dressed in traditional uniforms and clothing. The number of the Russian Don, a horse breed developed in and named after the steppes region where the Don River flows, are sprinkled about. Signed and titled by the artist.
