Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia was a German princess of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt, and the wife of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, the fifth son of Emperor Alexander II of Russia and Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine (Sergei Alexandrovich was governor of Moscow and uncle to Tsar Nicholas II). She was also a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Included are hitherto unpublished letters, including a revealing exchange between the Grand Duchess and her closest relatives on the subject of her conversion to Orthodox, as well as her establishment in Moscow of the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy. The biography covers her life, both an historical and spiritual. Grand Duchess Elizabeth was put to death in Alapaevsk in 1918 at the hands of the Bolshevik regime.
